Food & Wine

The ones who know me well enough, know that I love wine and could never say no to a good glass (well, who am I kidding: a bottle, actually). I know what I like, but also do not mind trying and discovering new wines and regions.

But, it wasn’t always like this. Back in the days, I did not have that much information about wines and the wine I used to drink was very cheap and very sweet. And to make it even worse, if it was not sweet enough, I used to add Coke to it (yes, I know- please do not judge).

It all changed when I met my ex. You see, he is the one who showed me the world of good wine and fine dining, even if at the beginning I was a bit skeptical (about the wine, mostly).

The first time I was invited to his place, he wanted to show off by opening a good bottle of Pomerol (I had no idea what that was at the time, as you can imagine) and after my first sip I politely asked if he had any Coke. He brought me a glass of Coke, thinking that I am thirsty, but turned completely white when he saw what I was about to do. I guess you do not need any description to what I was about to do (and did). That was my turning point and even if I still do not like Pomerol (but adore a good bottle of Lalande-de-Pomerol), I think I have learned a great deal about wines in the last 8 years.

I started paying more attention to what I am drinking and no, I do not add Coke to my wine anymore, not to mention that a sweet wine goes only with my dessert.

I do not pretend to be a connoisseur (you most probably need a school for that), but I know what kind of wines I like and I am pretty successful with pairing them with my food.

You see, for me a bottle of wine is not just a liquid that you drink because everyone else does. For me, each bottle has a story and the moment I open it and taste what’s inside, it takes me back to everything that happened until it got on my table.

People come and go, but the wine is still around:

And I found the Iona wine (that’s how I have been called since I moved to Switzerland).

Good wine is like good sex, you can never have enough.
